Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much space can your stoves heat?

A: All of my designs have roughly the same output power estimated at roughly 1.9kW/hr.  The J style cores are slightly less powerful than my batch and riserless cores.  All are designed to be capable of heating roughly 1200 sq. ft. of well insulated space in a moderate climate.

To summarize the Cook Stoves:

The Full Cook Stove is a full sized cook stove featuring an insulated fire brick core and a full baking oven.  The Full Cook Stove can be built with salvage materials and DIY doors and hardware, making it a potentially economical build.

The Tiny Cook Stove is the smallest cook stove, and utilizes a ceramic fiber core.  The Tiny uses a ceramic fiber core and DIY doors and hardware.

The Continental is a full sized cook stove featuring a ceramic fiber core and a full baking oven.  The Continental is designed using commercially available doors and hardware and requires no or very little fabrication depending on your finish choice.

All feature a firebox of roughly the same dimensions, and all are designed to heat roughly 1200 ft.sq. and couple to a 6″ chimney.

If building on a budget is a goal, I recommend the Full.  If space is at a premium, I recommend the Tiny.  If you desire a fine finish with a minimum of fabrication, I recommend the Continental.

Q: I’ve never built a stove or worked with brick. Can I build a stove using the plans?

A: Yes, the plans are designed to be easy-to-follow, allowing you to build the stove quickly and with minimal effort.

Q: How do the cook stoves differ?  Is one more powerful than another?

A: The Full Cook Stove was my first iteration and the core is built with insulated fire brick.  The Tiny and Continental utilize a ceramic fiber core that allows a higher firebox location for easier loading and a smaller overall stove footprint.

The Continental is simply the Tiny refined.  Rather than prioritizing a tiny footprint, the Continental is designed to offer a full sized baking oven and to utilize off the shelf doors and hardware for a simple, elegant build.
